It is not the common paper because it is the result of excellent arrangement of organized, cohesive and readable content. There are several key terms related to Bible paper that you should know. They are:
- Opacity. It is the transparency of the page rated from 800 to 1,600 based on the light shines through the sheet.
- Show-through. It is also known as ghosting that refers to the degree to which the print shows through on opposite side of certain page.
- PPI or Pages per Inch. It is about the measurement of the number of pages represented in an inch of the paper.
- Formation. It is used to describe the degree to which the fibers and pulp of the paper sheet are evenly dispersed or not.
- Lignin. It is special glue used to bind together the fibers.
- Titanium dioxide. It is used to provide opacity and whiteness.
- Bible Paper Types
Bible paper is divided into several categories.
- Groundwood. It is an oatmeal or brownish colored paper that is used for newspapers or books due to its low production cost. However, the lignin of this type of Bible paper can begin to deteriorate when it is exposed to sunlight and air. This makes the paper become brittle and yellow in look. It has high opacity with low PPI and thicker paper. Commonly, it is used in some economy Bible editions.
- Free sheet. It is the most commonly used paper for the Bible production. Lignin is available to protect the paper from decreasing opacity and discoloration. Titanium dioxide is also used to improve the opacity. It works with the titanium dioxide that also improves the opacity, but it increases the cost. When compared to groundwood type, it has higher PPI.
- Blended. This is without the free sheet process. Groundwood pulp is still preserved in it. Because of its free sheet components, the PPI is higher. It retains more opacity. With a naked eye, it is difficult to differentiate blended type from free sheet type. Unfortunately, it is still not clear about its deterioration and yellowing because this type of Bible paper is still new on the markets.
